eMapSite.com
show largest image on the Internet
Issue
date: Friday 15th December 2000
eMapSite.com
today announced they are now serving a 624 GigaByte street map
of the whole of the UK which is believed to be the largest single
image viewable on the Internet.
eMapSite
have processed a 1:10,000 scale street level map of the UK from
5,200 tiles supplied by Overview Mapping and based on Ordnance
Survey data. This file of 624 GigaBytes (624,694,000 KiloBytes)
in its uncompressed format supersedes the previous largest image
on the Internet, an aerial photograph mosaic of California that
was 190 GigaBytes. Both images have been processed using the
enhanced compression wavelet (ECW) technology from Earth Resource
Mapping that allows large images to be compressed with no discernable
loss of quality and served up in real-time over the Internet.
The
new map is being offered to commercial map users, such as utilities
and telecom companies, for use in their network, asset or logistics
planning and management, and to website owners, to provide informative
and compelling map content for their web sites.
All
eMapSite-hosted digital mapping is georeferenced and map accurate.
Furthermore, it is “application ready”. That is, all the data
is web-addressable via URL. With the use of free plug-ins (downloadable
from the website) this enables users of common GIS (including
ArcView, MapInfo and cadcorp), CAD (AutoCAD), image processing
(ER Mapper) and office applications (including MS-Office and
PhotoShop) to access and use very large map and image files
directly.
This
service has been available since eMapSite’s launch on June 30th
2000 and has an ever-expanding uptake of professional users
who can integrate their locally held data with a range of data
from eMapSite immediately and with the business benefits that
such outsourcing brings.
At
the same time this approach enables data to be served directly
from eMapSite into a Map Browser on client websites such as
Schoolsnet (www.schoolsnet.com).
The
map can be viewed in real-time over the Internet at emapsite
by clicking on the Explore-a-Map button on the home page. Site
visitors can interact with the map by simply clicking and dragging
the mouse to zoom and pan once a small, free plug-in has automatically
installed. A further 2.5 TeraBytes (2,500 GigaBytes) of maps,
aerial photography and satellite images are currently hosted
on the website.

Note
for Editors
eMapSite.com
is a UK registered company based in Hampshire, England,
and established by James Cutler and Justin Saunders,
who share over 30 years GIS experience, the last 7 years with
their own consultancy, GISL Limited. eMapSite is the
first commercial service to deliver large-scale georeferenced
maps and images in real time over the Internet. eMapSite
uses Image Web Server technology that also allows the user to
interactively roam and zoom over imagery.
The new eMapSite service brings benefits to two
distinct markets: commercial map users, such as utilities, telcos,
the public sector and professional GIS users, who need easy,
affordable access to digital map data for their GIS applications;
and website owners who wish to add informative and compelling
mapping content to their websites. The eMapSite website
at www.emapsite.com went live on 30 June 2000. eMapSite
is enabled by Level 3 Communications. Image Web Server is a
product of Earth Resource Mapping (www.ermapper.com).
