OpenRoads
show the way with eMapSite
Issue
date: Wed 7 March 2001
Open
Roads has selected eMapSite to be its mapping partner
and provide innovative map solutions for the new online travel
web site at www.openroads.com,
aimed at the independent traveller.
The
new map content will initially illustrate the location of places
featured on the Open Roads web site using UK street maps and
road maps from leading map publishers such as the Ordnance Survey
and Overview Mapping. In the near future, maps will also be
included to illustrate Open Road's recommended Tour Itineraries,
and to generate area-specific searches on the Open Road's extensive
database of places to stay, eat and visit.
eMapSite's
revolutionary technology allows visitors to seamlessly roam
and zoom over the entire map, so site visitors will not be restricted
to pre-defined map views but will be able locate and view their
particular areas of interest. This makes it easier for visitors
to put information in their own geographic context and, for
example, compare the location of their hotel with the location
of particular local tourist attractions.
Len
Wright, Open Roads Managing Director, said "Open Roads is taking
a very different approach to the online travel market, and integration
of eMapSite's map content will enable us further differentiate
our services. We will use the maps to make it even easier for
our visitors to find information for the areas they are interested
in. And, as the maps are truly interactive, we think our visitors
will find them not only useful, but also fun to use."
James
Cutler, CEO and founder of eMapSite, said "We look forward
to working closely with Open Roads to add real value to their
web site by providing dynamic map content to inform and delight
Open Roads' customers."

Note
for Editors
eMapSite.com
is a UK registered company based in Hampshire, England,
and established by James Cutler and Justin Saunders,
who share over 30 years GIS experience, the last 7 years with
their own consultancy, GISL Limited. eMapSite is the
first commercial service to deliver large-scale georeferenced
maps and images in real time over the Internet. eMapSite
uses Image Web Server technology that also allows the user to
interactively roam and zoom over imagery.
The new eMapSite service brings benefits to two
distinct markets: commercial map users, such as utilities, telcos,
the public sector and professional GIS users, who need easy,
affordable access to digital map data for their GIS applications;
and website owners who wish to add informative and compelling
mapping content to their websites. The eMapSite website
at www.emapsite.com went live on 30 June 2000. eMapSite
is enabled by Level 3 Communications. Image Web Server is a
product of Earth Resource Mapping (www.ermapper.com).
