eMapSite
to offer seamless internet street mapping from Ordnance Survey
Issue
date: Tuesday 27 March 2001
eMapSite,
the innovative online data provider, announce that they will
be offering the new Ordnance Survey Internet Street Mapping
for Great Britain as a seamless data set on their website to
make it faster and easier for customers to purchase the new
map.
eMapSite,
an Ordnance Survey licensed partner, will allow customers to
view and browse the complete map and then select and buy their
specific area of interest online. This means that customers
will be able obtain a map centred on a chosen location, rather
than having to purchase pre-defined datasets or tiles, with
the price for the selected area displayed dynamically online.
Delivery
will also be simplified. eMapSite allows customers to
access the data from eMapSite's servers via a URL (web
address) link. They can then load the data directly into their
GIS and other image processing or office applications, such
as MS Word. In its standard format, the new 1:10,000 scale street
level map of Britain would have to be delivered on 23 CDs, but
eMapSite will be able to deliver this as a single file
over the Internet.
eMapSite
will also be offering the map to web site owners as part of
their hosted web solutions. Web sites will be able to include
either all or any part of the new product as an interactive
map on their web sites.
The
new Internet Street Mapping, recently announced by the Ordnance
Survey, will be over 15,000Mb in its standard format, but eMapSite
will process the data using the enhanced compression wavelet
(ECW) technology from Earth Resource Mapping that allows large
images to be compressed with no discernable loss of quality
and served up in real-time over the Internet.
An
example of the new Internet Street Mapping can be viewed now
on www.emapsite.com by clicking on
the Explore-a-Map button on the home page.
