eMapSite.com
launch revolutionary map service for website owners
Issue
date:27 September 2000
eMapSite.com
today announced the official public launch of their revolutionary
map services for website owners at GIS 2000, the leading GIS
and spatial business intelligence event taking place at Earls
Court 2, London, 26-28 September 2000. The new map service is
the first to offer truly interactive roaming and zooming of
high-resolution map images in real time over the Internet.
eMapSite’s
map content provides website owners with a totally new and compelling
experience to offer to their site visitors, one that attracts
and retains visitors and thereby improves revenues from advertising,
sponsorship and e-commerce.
“One
user called the interactive roam and zooming facilities on our
map content ‘addictive’” says Peter Baynes, eMapSite’s
Marketing Manager. “Our map content provides not only the ‘stickiness’
that website owners look for, but is also informative and adds
value to their existing content. For example, a site can include
a map to show the location of a particular facility, such as
a hotel or school, and then allow the visitor to interact with
the map to put the information in a geographic context that
is meaningful to them.”
eMapSite’s
new services use Image Web Server (IWS) technology that combines
a file compression technique and file transfer protocol to enable
the delivery of large image files over the internet. A unique
ability of the IWS technology is ActiveZoom that allows users
to interactively roam and zoom over mapping.
Rather than clicking buttons to pan through an image,
ActiveZoom allows users to "grab" the map and move
it around the screen.
ActiveZoom also allows users to zoom in and out to any
zoom level or scale. This
technology puts control of the mapping content in the hands
of the user, not in buttons that force the user to select predefined
increments.
eMapSite
provide digital map data from a wide range of map and image
suppliers, including maps from the Ordnance Survey and aerial
photography from getmapping.com.
Since
the soft launch of their services in June 2000, eMapSite
have generated and received great interest from owners of websites
involved in the property, education, travel, tourism, news and
portal markets. eMapSite’s
map content can currently be seen on the leading education website
Schoolsnet.com. The travel site uTravel.co.uk will be taking
a trial service in October.

Note
for Editors
eMapSite.com
is a UK registered company based in Hampshire, England,
and established by James Cutler and Justin Saunders,
who share over 30 years GIS experience, the last 7 years with
their own consultancy, GISL Limited. eMapSite is the
first commercial service to deliver large-scale georeferenced
maps and images in real time over the Internet. eMapSite
uses Image Web Server technology that also allows the user to
interactively roam and zoom over imagery.
The new eMapSite service brings benefits to two
distinct markets: commercial map users, such as utilities, telcos,
the public sector and professional GIS users, who need easy,
affordable access to digital map data for their GIS applications;
and website owners who wish to add informative and compelling
mapping content to their websites. The eMapSite website
at www.emapsite.com went live on 30 June 2000. eMapSite
is enabled by Level 3 Communications. Image Web Server is a
product of Earth Resource Mapping (www.ermapper.com).
