Address Data vs Postcodes: What's the difference?
Address data and postcodes are closely related, but they do different jobs: a postcode can usually get you close to the right place. Address data helps you identify the place itself - which is ideal for a building comprehensive property intelligence.
A postcode helps identify a delivery area. It is useful for routing mail, narrowing down a location, and grouping addresses within a shared geography. In many cases, one postcode can cover several properties.
Address data identifies individual addresses and connects them to more detailed information, such as property names, building numbers, street names, classifications, coordinates and unique identifiers such as UPRNs.
In practical terms, postcodes help locate an area. Address data helps identify, manage and understand specific places within it. For example, a postcode might tell you which part of a street a property is on. Address data can help distinguish one flat, unit, building or site from another, even where names are similar or addresses are written in different ways.
This is why organisations use UK address data like AddressBase for more than mail delivery. It supports customer records, property management, planning, service delivery, asset management, emergency response, analysis and reporting.
Postcodes are still extremely useful. They are familiar, easy to use and widely understood. But where accuracy, matching or property-level decisions are important, postcode data alone may not be enough. If you need dependable address data for GIS, property data, planning or operational workflows, we can help you choose the right dataset, API or service for the job.
