How can utility companies keep mapping data up to date without downloading new files?
While it may feel as though utilities are ‘fixed’, the reality is the world changes. Utility companies depend on mapping that changes over time. New buildings appear, roads are altered, addresses change and geographic features are updated. And if mapping is stored as downloaded files, then keeping that information current means updates – and making sure they reach every system and team that needs them. One alternative is to access mapping as a managed online service.
Instead of holding a local copy of every dataset, a utility can connect its GIS, web application or other business system directly to centrally hosted geospatial data. Updates are then managed at source, so users continue accessing the maintained dataset without repeatedly downloading and distributing replacement files.
This approach is particularly useful for utilities because the same mapping may support network planning, asset management, field operations and infrastructure projects across different teams. Centrally managed data reduces the risk of one part of the organisation working with a newer version while another continues using an older file.
There are different ways to deliver the data. A Web Map Service (WMS) or Web Map Tile Service (WMTS) can stream current mapping for display, while a Web Feature Service (WFS) provides access to individual geographic features and their attributes. The right approach depends on whether users need to view the mapping or interrogate the underlying data.
Moving away from repeated downloads can also reduce the administration surrounding spatial data. GIS and IT teams spend less time storing updates, replacing datasets and maintaining multiple copies, while users get more consistent access to the information supporting their work.
That doesn’t mean downloads are obsolete. They remain useful where teams need offline access, local processing or greater control over the underlying dataset. The opportunity is to stop treating downloads as the default when continuously maintained access would work better.
Idox Geospatial can host, manage and maintain authoritative geospatial datasets on behalf of utility organisations, delivering them through online services into existing GIS and business systems. That gives teams access to current mapping without making every data update another internal distribution exercise.
