Planning maps for change of use applications

If you’re making a change of use planning application, then you’ll usually need a location plan and, in many cases, a site plan or block plan as well. Most planning applications need both. Change-of-use proposals often need a site to be shown clearly in its wider context and in more detail on the ground.

The location plan shows the site in its wider surroundings. It’s usually based on up-to-date OS mapping at 1:1250 or 1:2500 scale, and should show the application site edged clearly in red, with any other nearby land you own edged in blue. It should also include a north point and enough surrounding detail to identify the site easily.

A site plan or block plan is more detailed. For a change-of-use application, it helps the planning authority understand the site layout, boundaries, access, and how the property relates to neighbouring land or buildings. Site plans are commonly provided at 1:200 or 1:500 scale.

Some change-of-use proposals may need extra supporting documents as well, so if you’re not sure, doc heck with your local authority first. Then, when you’re sure which planning maps you need for your Change of Use Application, our MapShop is a great place to start.

We can help you access the correct location plan, block plan, or both – using the right OS mapping from the outset, so that your application conforms with the authority’s expectations.

How Emapsite can help

Start with the outcome: basemap, raw data, or API – then write down (1) internal vs external use, and (2) who needs access, including contractors. With those two facts, you can avoid overbuying, pick the right pricing model, and keep compliance simple. If you want, we’ll sanity-check the scope and suggest the cleanest route before you commit budget.
