What is a UPRN and why does it matter?
A UPRN is a Unique Property Reference Number. In simple terms, it is a unique identifier for an addressable location.
That location is often something we’d recognise as an address – a house, an office, or a public building – but it can also be something that doesn’t have a normal postal address, such as an electricity substation, bus shelter or other addressable object.
UPRNs are especially useful for organisations that hold address, property, customer, asset or service data. If two systems describe the same place slightly differently, a UPRN can help show that they are still referring to the same location.
In practice, UPRNs can help organisations:
Match records across different databases
Reduce duplicate or inconsistent address data
Connect customers, properties, assets and services to the right location
Improve GIS analysis and reporting
Support planning, emergency response, asset management and service delivery
Share property information more accurately between teams and organisations
What makes the UPRN so valuable?
The important word is ‘unique’. A postcode can cover several properties. A street name can be written in different ways. A building name can change – a property can be split, merged, renamed, rebuilt or demolished – but a UPRN is specific. It provides a single point of truth.
This matters because address data can become messy very quickly. One system might hold ‘Flat 2, 10 High Street’. Another might hold ‘10B High St’. A third might use a slightly different postcode or building name. Without a consistent identifier, those differences can create confusion, delay and error.
A UPRN lookup can help solve that problem: it’s a stable reference for the location itself. The address text may vary, but the underlying reference gives organisations a better way to connect data with confidence.
UPRNs sit at the heart of Ordnance Survey’s AddressBase products. They are also increasingly important in public-sector data standards, property workflows, planning, housing, utilities, emergency services and location-based analysis. For any organisation trying to make better use of address or property data, they provide a practical way to connect information that might otherwise remain fragmented.
So why does a UPRN matter?
Good decisions depend on knowing exactly which place you are talking about. A UPRN gives that place a consistent identity. That makes address data easier to manage, easier to share and easier to trust.
If you need to use UPRNs in your organisation, Emapsite by Idox Geospatial can help you understand the right AddressBase product, API or data workflow for the job. Whether you need address matching, property-level analysis, GIS integration or better data quality across your systems, UPRNs are often the best place to start.
