BGS Geology 10k-25k V3 - sample image

BGS Geology 10k-25k v3 is a geological dataset produced by the British Geological Survey (BGS). It is provided at 1:10 000 scale, with 1:25 000 scale data in some upland areas and covers around 50% of the country, including many urban centres and transport routes in Great Britain. The product is priced only for the areas that are covered.

BGS Geology 10k-25k v3 has been completely rebuilt from the previous version. It has new attribution which is now aligned with the BGS Geology 50k dataset. The new attribution comprises 37 fields of information covering a range of typical geological and metadata attributes, with the two map scales presented as single layer. A description of the attributes is supplied with the data.

BGS Geology 10k-25k v3 describes geological areas attributed with a name based on their lithostratographical, chronostratographical or lithodemic nomenclature and their composition (rock type or lithology) in four themes:

- Bedrock Geology
solid, underlying rock formations that form the Earth's crust;

- Superficial Deposits
geological materials less than 2.6 million years old formed by natural processes such as glacial action, water and wind that lie on top of older bedrock;

- Mass Movement
superficial deposits that have moved downslope under gravity to form landslips; and

- Artificial Ground
ground surface has been significantly modified by human activity.

Geology maps are the foundation for many other types of earth science-related maps and are of potential use to a wide range of customers.
