OS Places API is a address look-up web service providing the up-to-date UK address data as vector points from AddressBase® Premium and AddressBase Premium Islands datasets. It provides a detailed view of an address and its life cycle with all the information relating to an address or property from creation to retirement.
OS Places API contains local authority, Ordnance Survey and Royal Mail® addresses, including current addresses, alternative addresses, provisional addresses (such as planning developments) and historic information, plus Objects Without a Postal Address (OWPAs). It provides cross referencing opportunity via the unique property reference point (UPRN) and OS MasterMap® TOIDS®, plus map coordinates (except for addresses in Jersey and Guernsey).
OS Places API is typically used for postcode searching, address finding, form-filling, geocoding and verifying address records against authoritative data. It returns matched addresses based on:
- free text search
- property postcode
- UPRN
- A pair of coordinates (X and Y) (closest match)
- within a bounding box
- within a circular buffered area
- within a geoJSON polygon/multi-polygon object
Calls must be made using a secure hypertext encryption (HTTPS) and support TLS v1.2 and queries are returned in either XML or JSON.
