Idox PRoW / Core Path Information

Idox PRoW gives you all the data you need to identify and understand Public Rights of Way in England and Wales, and Core Paths in Scotland.

What is IDOX PRoW?

IDOX PRoW combines all the data you need to identify where people can walk, ride, or cycle on a route, knowing they’re doing so legally. Our current dataset includes all Core Paths in Scotland, and over 99% of local authorities in England and Wales.

Across the board, these routes comprise a range of paths, waterways, and other means of crossing land – and that means a huge number of original data sources.

What’s included in IDOX PRoW?

With annual updates, Idox PRoW is available as a standalone dataset, which you can download, as a GPKG file and style files (QML and SLD).

It includes:

•    Bridleways
•    Byways
•    Byways Open to All Traffic (BOATs)
•    Footpaths
•    Permissive Bridleways
•    Permissive Footpaths
•    Restricted byways

We’ve created this dataset from publicly available sources, combining millions of datapoints to provide a nationwide overview. There may be inconsistencies due to those sources not being standardized, and of course each Local Authority publishes information to different timescales and with different levels of detail.

Why should you care about PRoW accuracy?

If you have a statutory duty to maintain or divert PRoWs and Core Paths on your land – or you’re finding new sites and doing feasibility work – then you know up-to-date info about PROWs is vital.

Discovering a PRoW after the fact could be costly, potentially even doing harm to a £million project.  What’s more, any obstruction, alteration, or removal of a PRoW or a Core Path without the proper authorisation is illegal.

The consequences could be legal action, fines, or enforcement orders in the short term – all of which cost time and money – and project failure, which brings its own problems in the long term.
